3 die as snomobiles go through the ice on a frozen Vermont lake. Three snowmobiles were crossing the lake Saturday, carrying six people on Lake Dunmore. The accident occurred about 100 yeards from shore about noon Saturday. Five people went into the water and were later pulled out by rescue crews. A 4-year-old was pushed to safety before the snowmobile he was riding went through the ice.
The four year old then ran to shore for help. Rescuers used a ladder, a roof rake and a 200-foot length of rop in the rescue. A 6 year old boy was conscious when pulled from the water, which is about 30 feet deep, or more, in that section of the lake. Authorities don't know how thick the ice was at the time, but snowmobiling tracks were left in the area before the accident.
A 50 year old man, a 24 year old woman, and a 3-year old girl were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The accident was the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving snowmobiles in Vermont.
